For any stakeholder in the value chain, control of the app store offers lots of opportunities to improve the customer experience on an ongoing basis. It also assures a position in the content ecosystem. As carriers must worry about becoming a “dumb pipe”, handset vendors have similar worries about becoming a “Dell”, or commoditized hardware. The app store helps us keep participating in an ongoing quality user experience.
